Program Structure

WHY THE THREAD MATTERS

The Thread bridges the gap between creativity and sustainability while addressing critical challenges such as:

Lack of access to creative programs in underserved communities
Limited awareness of sustainability and environmental issues
Need for youth
empowerment and leadership opportunities

Through this program, students gain skills in design, teamwork, leadership, entrepreneurship, and community impact while fostering a lifelong appreciation for sustainability.

Week-by-Week Journey

Week 1:
Orientation & Sustainability Kickoff

Objective: Set the tone with team-building, program goals, and an introduction to sustainability.

  • Icebreakers and goal-setting activities
  • Hands-on activity: Sorting and identifying reusable fabrics from events
  • Introduction to fashion design research
  • Inspirational talk from a sustainability expert

Week 2:
Design Fundamentals & Workshop

Objective: Teach the basics of fashion design and inspire creativity.

  • Creating mood boards and sketching designs
  • Workshops on fabric types and repurposing techniques
  • AI-assisted sewing pattern generation
  • Showcase of past sustainable designs for inspiration

Week 3:
Prototyping & Garment Construction

Objective: Turn design ideas into prototypes.

  • Workshops on sewing basics and garment construction
  • Collaboration with mentors and seamstresses
  • Peer feedback and design refinements
  • Mid-week check-ins with progress milestones

Week 4:
Entrepreneurship in Action

Objective: Develop entrepreneurial skills.

  • Branding, marketing, and storytelling workshops
  • Pricing strategies and budgeting basics
  • Guest speaker: Local entrepreneur/designer insights
  • Practice pitching their product ideas to peers and mentors

Week 5:
Leadership & Community Engagement

Objective: Build leadership and foster community responsibility.

  • Team-building exercises
  • Planning how designs will serve or inspire the community
  • Continued preparations for the Fashion Show and Auction
  • Workshop on creating a personal leadership style

Week 6:
Event Planning & Execution

Objective: Equip participants with event-planning and digital media skills.

  • Rehearsals for the fashion show
  • Finalizing garments and marketing materials
  • Assigning event roles: emcees, stage managers, and setup crews
  • Social media training for promoting the event

Week 7:
Fashion Show, Auction, & Celebration

Objective: Celebrate and showcase participants’ achievements.

  • Fashion Show: Students model their creations
  • Auction: Fundraising for future programs
  • Certificates of Achievement and mentor highlights
  • Closing session: Reflections and envisioning future projects
